A major internet disruption hit West and Central Africa on Thursday, the internet observatory Netblocks said, citing reports from operators of multiple subsea cable failures.
South Africa is enduring a massive internet outage. Users have reported extremely slow internet speeds, with many services and websites such as Microsoft 365, Google, WhatsApp and various banking services being inaccessible. It appears that the source of the problem is due to multiple failures in undersea cables in the Atlantic Ocean that links South Africa’s internet to Europe’s. To limit damage, cloud hosting companies such as Cloudflare and Microsoft Azure, are now rerouting internet traffic to alternative servers.

Ghana, along with Liberia, Benin, and Burkina Faso, is experiencing high impact from the outage. The cause of these problems, which are affecting connectivity for people in the region, is unclear, although it’s noted that sub-sea cable failures are being reported by companies operating the internet infrastructure. Additionally, South Africa is experiencing slow internet speeds due to multiple sub-sea cable failures between South Africa and Europe, impacting network providers, according to a spokesperson from Vodacom. Ghana’s National Communications Authority has also issued an alert to customers.
